Creative Journey Personal Story

How Starting Without a Plan Helped Me Create My First Fashion Series

Fashion and makeup have always been my creative escape. I still remember putting on my first bit of makeup when I was eleven, just some kohl eyeliner, Chapstick, and a little cold cream, and feeling like I was part of a colorful story. Growing up, I’d cut out pictures from magazines, read fashion blogs, and save outfit inspirations for the day I could try them myself. But where I come from, academics always came first, so fashion stayed something I admired from afar, something I thought I’d get to “someday.”

That “someday” came when I moved to Canada to study Broadcasting Performance and Digital Media in 2024. As part of my program, I had to produce a television show from scratch, everything from concept and writing to filming and editing. The only problem was, I didn’t know what kind of show to make.

I had plenty of ideas floating around, but between classes, assignments, and tight deadlines, I couldn’t bring any of them to life alone. I needed someone who could share the vision and energy it would take to make this project real.

That’s when my best friend, Sukhpreet, joined me. We had met during our Audio Video Production classes and quickly became inseparable. We were both tired, stressed, and a little lost about what to create, so we started talking about what truly excited us. That conversation led to fashion.

We both lit up instantly, and before we knew it, we were sketching out ideas for a show that would mix creativity, culture, and fun. We didn’t start with a strategy, a plan, or even a clear goal. We started with a spark, and that spark became our direction.

That’s how Style Shuffle: The Fashion Funhouse was born.

You Don’t Always Need a Perfect Plan

People often say that to start a project, you need clear goals, strategies, and tactics. But I’ve learned that sometimes, the best things come from simply beginning, even before you have it all figured out. Your idea itself can shape your goals and your vision along the way.

Here’s what I learned from creating Style Shuffle with zero budget and a whole lot of heart:

1. Start with Passion, Not Perfection

Before you think about cameras or scripts, think about why you want to create something. For me, it was about combining my love for fashion with storytelling.

Sukhpreet and I weren’t fashion experts, and that was okay. We decided our show would be about having fun, being real, and expressing individuality. The heart of it wasn’t perfection; it was passion.

2. Brainstorm a Format You Can Actually Manage

We knew we didn’t have money for big sets or actors, so we kept it simple. Style Shuffle had four short episodes:

Casual vs. Party Looks: We styled each other and shared honest reactions.

Diwali Special: We swapped traditional outfits to celebrate our cultures.

Style Swap: I dressed in Sukhpreet’s edgy style, and she tried my feminine look.

Prom Night Special: A light-hearted skit where my prom date cancels and she saves the day.

The key is to work within your resources. Focus on creativity, not complexity.

3. Use What You Have

Our total production cost? Exactly zero dollars.

Camera: Nikon Z6 (borrowed from college)

Studio: Used our school’s broadcasting studio

Editing: Adobe Premiere Pro which all Conestoga students have access to

If you don’t have fancy equipment, use your phone. Natural light and good ideas go a long way. The goal isn’t to look perfect; it’s to start.

4. Divide Roles and Collaborate

Even small projects need teamwork. I handled writing and directing, while Sukhpreet managed shooting and editing. Some nights, we slept only two hours, but our teamwork made it worth it.

Collaboration teaches you leadership, trust, and communication, lessons that last much longer than any project.

5. Keep It Real

Our professor said the best part of our show was that the chemistry on screen felt real, because it was. We didn’t over-rehearse or chase perfection. We were just two best friends having fun in front of the camera.

Audiences connect more with authenticity than flawless production. Let your personality shine through.

6. The Takeaway

If there’s one thing I’ve learned from creating Style Shuffle, it’s this: you don’t need to have it all planned out to begin. You can start with a spark, an idea that excites you, and let everything else take shape as you go.

Start messy. Start curious. Start anyway.

Because sometimes, the best creative journeys don’t begin with a strategy, they begin with a story.
